New Athletic Director at Mercyhurst.

USCHO reports that Mercyhurst has promoted former associate athletic director Craig Barnett to the head athletic director position.

“We are very pleased that (Barnett) has agreed to lead the athletic department at Mercyhurst. He brings a love of the institution and a genuine commitment to the overall welfare of student-athletes. We expect great things with Craig at the helm,” notes Mercyhurst College president Dr. Thomas Gamble.

Barnett replaces Pete Russo, who, on June 22nd, announced his retirement after 17 years as athletic director at Mercyhurst. Russo will leave his helm on the 31st of August.

The Oakville, Ontario native Barnett spent two years at Mercyhurst (1991-’93) as an assistant hockey coach and a director at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Following his work at Mercyhurst, Barnett then worked at Kent State, where he received his master’s degree in sports administration and was an assistant hockey coach.

Barnett moved on to the head coaching position at Findlay in 1995, propelling that program from the club ranks to NCAA D-III (and later D-I) in an eight year span.

Barnett would then take the AD position at D-III Becker College before landing back at Murcyhurst as the associate director of athletics in December of 2006.
